JOURNESE

As the luxury brand of Pleasant Holidays, we have been serving clients since 1977, consistently surpassing expectations and providing unforgettable journeys.Viking River Cruises
Driving demand
Unlike some of his competitors, Viking aggressively pursues direct marketing to consumers.
"It's no secret," Hagen said. "We do direct mail, and we take direct bookings. We really don't care where people book. The main thing is that they do book. But when they book with us, travel agents get commissions on everything. For an average Viking booking, an agent gets $1,500. We pay on anything [associated with the product] that's prebooked. We pay 5% commission on air; who the hell does that these days?"

Apple Leisure Group to acquire Travel Impressions from Amex
By Michelle Baran
American
Express Travel Related Services Company Inc. and Apple Leisure Group
have entered into an agreement under which Apple will acquire Amex’s
global tour operator business, including Travel Impressions. Apple will also acquire American Express Vacations International, Amex’s international tour operator businesses in Europe and Mexico, which is managed by Travel Impressions.
The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter. Additional terms were not disclosed.
Under the agreement, Travel Impressions will be a preferred supplier of American Express Travel, Amex’s travel agency network. It will license the American Express Vacations brand and will remain the exclusive supplier of packaged vacation products and services sold through the brand to American Express Travel's customers.
Travel Impressions will continue to operate its business under the existing brand name, and will continue to selling its products beyond those provided to American Express.
"We are very pleased with the acquisition of Travel Impressions and the international tour operator business, which have an outstanding reputation for providing successful customer-centric programs and processes," Jeff Mullen, co-president of Apple Vacations (the tour operator division of Apple Leisure Group), said in a statement.
Tim Mullen, co-president of Apple Vacations, stated, "This strategic transaction provides a tremendous opportunity to enhance the Apple Leisure Group portfolio and drive greater value and service to our customers by taking advantage of the strong executive and employee teams of both companies to promote sustained industry leadership."
Private investment firm Bain Capital Partners invested in Apple Leisure Group in December 2012, and served as a close strategic partner with Apple’s management team in driving this next phase of growth.
Travel Impressions CEO Steve Gorga said, "This is the right next step for our company.”
Travel Impressions and Apple Vacations have long been competitors in the industry, both having built their business on selling packages to fun-and-sun destinations and beyond.
Travel Impressions was founded in 1974 and offers packages to more than 200 destinations.
Apple Leisure Group is a holding company comprised of Apple Vacations; AMResorts, a hotel management company; Amstar, a destination-management company; and Unlimited Vacation Club, a members-only travel club.

By Kate Rice
Travelport
has unveiled a new merchandising platform that enables
comparison-shopping across all participating airline products —
including ancillaries.Travel agents can use the platform to shop and book traditional carriers who connect with Travelport via ATPCO (the traditional source of information about fares and availability) as well as airlines with which Travelport has an API connection.
Agencies can shop both types of carriers in a single display. This means agents don't have to go to airline websites to book ancillaries.
Products in this new platform include Air Canada’s ancillaries and fare groups, KLM Economy Comfort seating and pre-paid seating on British Airways. Agents can also book ancillary products for Alitalia, Air New Zealand and Aegean.
Earlier this month, Travelport launched Aggregated Shopping with EasyJet, which means Travelport agencies can now sell all EasyJet fares and ancillaries, including those that previously were available only on EasyJet's website.
Derek Sharp, Travelport's managing director of global distribution and sales, said the merchandising platform enables airlines to “go to market with all of their products in the right place, at the right time, in every channel.”
The ability to shop ancillaries as well as fares has been the holy grail for travel agencies and GDSs.
Sabre offers the ability to shop some airline ancillaries in its Sabre Red desktop, and Amadeus' Ancillary Services Solutions enables airlines to offer ancillaries to travel agents.
Special Needs Group launches cruise portal
By Kate Rice
The Special Needs Group (SNG) has upgraded its web portal to provide information about cruise ship accessibility. Norwegian Cruise Line is its launch partner, but throughout the year SNG said it will add cruise lines until all ships with accessible features in the North American market have been included.
"Part of our corporate responsibility includes educating travel professionals, as well as the traveling public, about how the freedom of travel is more readily available now than ever before," said Andrew Garnett, CEO of the Special Needs Group.
Garnett said that making non-commercial information about accessible travel can help spread the word about it.
The new information follows other information SNG has introduced for travel agents so far this year, including the Ship Accessibility Checklist, Mobility Scooter/Power Chair Etiquette and Scooter/Power Chair Dos and Don’ts.
These can be found on the agent section of Special Needs Group website, www.specialneedsgroup.com/agents.
